✦ ABOUT ALT:EGO ✦ 

Presented by UTS Alternative Fashion Society, ALT:EGO (read: “alter ego”) is a dreamy little archive for celebrating alternative style through the looks that make you feel most like yourself, whether they’re cute, edgy, cozy, flashy, or something in between!

Inside, you’ll find DIY tutorials, lovingly drawn art, and fashion photography worthy of a museum (or at least a very cute magazine!)

ALT:EGO is open to all lovers of alternative fashion in Australia, regardless of presentation and gender ♡ However, submissions from AFS club members, the UTS community, and Sydney-based contributors will be prioritised!

 ✦ THE VISION ✦ 

  ✦ Issue One: Angel & Devil    

The first edition of ALT:EGO will have a reversible format (like the A/B sides of a vinyl), with separate sections for cute and edgy styles. Submissions will be sorted between the two sides!

Our talented graphic designers will edit your fashion photos into super cool spreads, inspired by iconic Japanese street fashion mags like FRUiTS. This is your chance to feature in a real fashion magazine! ♡ Check out these examples by Jommy and Sen:

 ✦ INSIDE THE MAGAZINE ✦ 

We’re looking for: photo series, outfit breakdowns, essays/articles, tutorials, illustrations, comics, all kinds of lists (recommendations, quotes, anything alt fashion related!)

Whether you take photos, draw, write, or just have way too many fit pics… send them in ♡

  ✦ Original Content    

Image Submissions:

  • Alt fashion photography — your best looks and fit pics

  • Clothing based photography — wardrobe pictures, room pictures, pictures of your collections (could be rare clothing items, favourite shoes, makeup, hair accessories, jewellery, etc)

  • Virtual/conceptual fashion — showcasing outfits from fashionable video games or dolls

  • Fashion art — original art or fanart featuring alternative fashion

  • Comics & manga — about alt fashion or experiences you’ve had while wearing it

Writing or Article Submissions:

  • DIYs & tutorials — style hacks, step-by-step makeup tips

  • Subculture spotlights — infodump about your fav fashions, popular or niche

  • Horoscopes — your next look according to the stars

  • Film recs — iconic fashion or costume design

Collaborative Submissions:

Image Submissions:

  • Design student showcase — pictures of finished collections, process diaries, specific clothing pieces, anything related to alternative fashion culture made by students studying design and creative courses

Writing or Article Submissions:

  • AFS timeline — highlights from past events

  • AFS Member stories — your alt fashion journey, what alt fashion means to you, why you joined AFS, etc

✦ SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ✦

ALT:EGO is open for submission until March 29, 2026!
Please stay tuned for more details about production!

  ✦ Image Quality    

Please submit high-resolution images (300 DPI and at least 2000px on the shortest side). We prefer clean lighting and unfiltered/lightly edited photos! PNG and JPEG/JPG (highest quality) only.

Please avoid:

  • heavy colour grading

  • overexposure

  • extreme distortion

  • added decorative stickers or borders/frames (if you want us to edit in this aesthetic, show us in an inspo folder!)

  ✦ File Naming    

Label each file clearly so we know what’s what! For example:

  ✦ Face Censorship    

If you'd like your face to be hidden, either censor it yourself before uploading or label your file like this:

We’ll add a cute sticker or emoji that fits your style ♡

  ✦ Upload Guide    

  • Choose either ANGEL ʚ♡ɞ or DEVIL 𓆩⛧𓆪 depending on your aesthetic!

  • Click on the category that matches your submission: Image, Writing-Only, or Article (Writing + Images)

  • Inside the category folder, create a subfolder titled: YourName @Username - Title

For example: Nana @black_stones - Outfit Photos

  • Upload your work!

Notes:

  • Please add a new folder for every unique submission under your name!

  • For Article (Writing + Images) submissions, please include your images in a separate Article Images folder!

  • If you have a specific vibe or aesthetic you'd like us to match, please create an Inspo folder within your folder! (Feel free to drop in reference pics, moodboards, or Pinterest links!)

  • If your photo contains multiple people or if you’re submitting a collaborative work, all contributors (including photographers) must be credited in a Contributor Credits document with their names and/or social media.

✱     IMPORTANT      To be included in ALT:EGO, you must fill out our Contributor Consent Form. This confirms you’re happy for us to feature your work, and helps us keep everything organised. Submissions without this form will not be considered!

❛ Q : Do I need to format any pages into a magazine spread myself?

Nope! Our design team will handle layout and make your work shine ✧ If you have a specific vibe in mind, just include a subfolder with inspo images or a Pinterest link! Fully formatted spreads will likely not be accepted as we have specific requirements for the magazine's layout.

❛ Q : Will the magazine be published physically?

Yes! ALT:EGO will be professionally printed and available as a free digital PDF. Physical pre-orders come with an exclusive merch bundle, so keep an eye out! ♡

❛ Q : Can I submit to ALT:EGO if I’m not from Australia?

Unfortunately, we will only be accepting submissions from contributors based in Australia.

❛ Q : I don't feel like my style suits ANGEL nor DEVIL, where should I submit?

That's okay! ANGEL and DEVIL are just loose themes for us to organise the magazine visually, so don't worry if you don't fit the themes exactly. Just submit into the side you resonate slightly more with!

❛ Q : I’m uncomfortable with showing my face, but I still want to submit my outfits!

❛ Q : I want to be featured, but I don’t think my photos are very good!

No stress! We will be hosting a photo studio event with our AFS photographers, so stay tuned for details on our Instagram and Discord server!

❛ Q : Are cosplay photos acceptable?

Sadly, cosplay photos in official character outfits will not be accepted, as we want to focus on alternative styles that come from you, rather than costumes! If you feel like your cosplay meets this criteria, please contact us and we will clarify if your submission is okay or not.

❛ Q : Will contributors get a discount on the magazine?

Yes, all contributors to ALT:EGO will receive a discount code for the physical magazine! These codes will be distributed via email.

 ✦ TERMS & CONDITIONS ✦ 

By submitting to ALT:EGO, you acknowledge and agree to the following:

  • You grant UTS Alternative Fashion Society (AFS) permission and full creative freedom to edit, format, and adapt your work for layout and design purposes, with care taken to preserve your original intent.

  • You retain full ownership of your submitted work. We will only use your content within the ALT:EGO Magazine and any associated promotions (e.g. sneak peeks on our Instagram or Discord server).

  • All work must be your own. No plagiarised, AI-generated, or copied content will be accepted. If you are submitting collaborative work, please ensure all contributors (including photographers) are credited and have given permission.

  • For photographs taken by the UTS AFS Executive team, you may assume permission for publishing is given and does not need to be obtained.

  • If your submission includes photography featuring people other than yourself, you confirm that everyone visible in the photo has given explicit permission for their image to be used in both print and digital formats of the magazine.

  • Not all submissions are guaranteed publication. Our team will carefully curate content to fit the tone and layout of the magazine.

  • You will be credited for your work using the name, alias or Instagram handle provided in this form.

  • If your submission is accepted, we may contact you for clarification or small edits before print.

  • Submissions may appear in both print and digital formats of the magazine.
